Basics questions

What does Oronjo do?

Oronjo offers you a simple tool to get a nice fee for your content. This can be text, sound or a program file, for example.

You can start your own record shop and sell your own music, you can sell your thesis or make money with the high-res versions of your Flickr photos, just to name a few. Like Radiohead, you can sell your content directly to your fans!

No fuss, Oronjo is a 100% free. You can do it yourself, from your own site.

Why a whale?

Because the whale eats a really small animal called plankton and it’s become the biggest mammal ever by eating lots of little plankton.

We feel it's the same when you're selling content: people are used to free content, and will only pay for something when the fee is friendly. Don’t try to make a lot of money from a few visitors. Try to make a little money from many visitors.

How does it work?

Before publishing your content, you use a wizard on our site.

manual - how to use wizard

This wizard uploads the secure part of your HTML page or file (the part for which people have to pay) to our server. This even works for weblog articles, without changing their design.

Now, a visitor can only get access to your content after paying a fee.

People can pay you by clicking the inserted Oronjo icon. They can pay you with a PayPal account or with credit card.

Content can be sold for a fixed price. If you like the fee can also be decided by the consumer.

Additionally, sellers can use discount coupons.

How does Oronjo do this?

When you sell an article on a webpage or weblog, we copy the part of your page that is for sale to our server - all formatting included. Your webpage still looks the same as it normally would.

When selling a file, we only put the file on our server.

Either way, we return a piece of HTML to you and you put this on your page. As a result, your content is hosted from a secure web server with a pay module.

What kind of content can I offer?

Any content you like.

We divide content into two main categories: (1) files (any type, such as MP3 / WMV / ZIP / DOC / PDF / EXE etc.) and (2) articles on webpages or weblogs.

What if I delete my content?

When you delete your content, we will continue hosting it until a year after the last sale. We do this to make sure that everyone who buys your content, can have access to it for at least one year.

However, deleted content will not be offered for sale again once it has been deleted.

What about the copyright of my content?

If you own the copyright of the content offered for sale with Oronjo, then you will continue to do so. You give Oronjo permission ('a non-exclusive license') to use your content according to our service, such as putting your content on our server and distributing it to people who bought your content.

Simply put: you don't transfer copyrights to Oronjo by joining our service.

See also our terms of service, specifically Article 6C (etc.).

Which browsers are supported?

Why do some buttons have a lock icon?

When you see a lock icon on your button, this means that your data will be sent using a secure HTTPS/SSL-encrypted connection.

What can I do with my Oronjo RSS feed?

Your RSS feed looks like this: http://www.oronjo.com/live/feed/profile. You can put a link to this feed on your site. People can subscribe to it and automatically receive a message when you offer new content for sale. They can easily buy this content by clicking the RSS feed.

Who initiated Oronjo?

Ronald Luitwieler (binary thinker / Oracle specialist), Ingmar de Lange (creative talker, marketing specialist) and a team of dedicated friends.

It's a story you might have heard before. After years of working as freelance consultants for large brands and companies, both Ronald and Ingmar felt it would be nice to do something that's more about fun & less about making a profit (therefore, the Oronjo service is free).

So, a year ago they decided to follow a life long ambition of doing a little good for the world and doing this together.

Around the same time, Ingmar was working on his debut novel. One night, they talked about the money the average writer makes on a novel (about 10% of the sales, this is about $ 1.50 per novel).

Ronald pointed out to Ingmar that it might be a better idea to sell his novel himself, online for only $ 1.50. This is how the concept for Oronjo was born.

So, in short, besides making money, we want to be nice people by making other people happy.

Therefore, our concept is based on being friendly and simple. And it's free (for now). Thus, you won't see any corporate nonsense on our site - ok, we do have some terms of service ;), but for the rest, it’s just a friendly whale and some simple web pages. Oh, and a special service for charity!

Oronjo is based in Houston, USA and Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

What is the Oronjo Wordpress plugin?

The Oronjo Wordpress Plugin allows you to easily import your Oronjo content into your Wordpress blog. Once imported, modifications in your Oronjo content can be updated with one click.

Note: Wordpress plugins only work if you have the Wordpress software installed (see Wordpress.org).

It goes like this
All articles you write or have available on your Oronjo account can be imported into your Wordpress blog with just one click. Note: a maximum of ten content items will be updated each time you use this option.

In other words, when you want to sell a new article on your Wordpress blog: just go to Oronjo, hit Sell new content, select an article and write your article in the Oronjo editor. Follow the rest of the wizard, go to your Oronjo plugin in Wordpress and select Update Oronjo Posts.

You start like this
Download the plugin here and install it.

In Wordpress, go to Settings > Oronjo Plugin.

Then, enter your Oronjo username.

Next, login to your Oronjo account and copy the API key on the My Settings page. Note: the API key will only be visible when you have the checkbox next to it selected.

Go back to your Wordpress Settings page and paste the API key.

Indicate whether you want to give newly imported Oronjo content the status of published or draft and choose a category or tag when applicable.

Save these settings and hit Update Oronjo Posts. That's all.

When you modify your Oronjo content, selecting Update Oronjo Posts will also update all modifications in your Wordpress blog.

Note: at the bottom of your Wordpress settings page, you can see the Update Log with the results of the update procedure.

Financial questions

Why can I sell content without paying you a fee?

We feel it's a first priority to create a strong proposition. In what way we can make money is something we will study later.

Our guiding principle will always be the same as the one we suggest you use: we will offer 80% of our service for free and will one day consider charging a small fee for the other, premium 20%. This might be based on purchase price, bandwidth use, number of sales or the kind of service you use.

Wondering how we can offer you our service for free? Well, we didn't involve any venture capitalist. So we don't have any debts to pay. Also, we only work with people who share our pleasure principle.

What do I earn?

You earn money when somebody buys your content.

However, although we offer a free service, a fee is subtracted by PayPal* (5% + $0.05 per transaction or 2.9% + $0.30 depending on the PayPal account you have) or the credit card payment (rates of PayPal), since they take care of the payment.

An additional fee can be charged for currency conversion when a consumer has an account in a different currency (about 0.5 to 1% per transaction*).

* Note: the fees mentioned above should be considered estimates, these rates may change without prior notice.

An example

PayPal
Price for content
1.00
Payment fee
(fixed)
0.05
Payment fee
(variable)
0.05
Your revenue
0.90
Note: these are estimates, the actual costs may vary

What kind of price should I ask?

Don’t get (too) greedy. Generally, think of amounts up to $1. People are used to free content, and will only pay for something when the fee is friendly (see iTunes, for example). Don’t try to make a lot of money from a few visitors. Try to make a little money from many visitors.

Remember our role model, the whale. He only eats small plankton but he’s become the biggest mammal by eating a lot of them...

Can I let my customers decide what to pay?

Yes, following the Radiohead example, people can always decide to support you by paying you a little extra for your content. Please note, that just like Radiohead, this works best when your base price is very low (preferably zero).

Why should content be sold?

We have two answers. The short one is this: we feel that the more income people can generate with their content, the more time they can spend creating it and making it better.

The long one can be found at our Knowledge Base. Here you find many arguments why selling content works in a 'freeconomy'. Also, we collected many articles on this subject.

Isn't the Internet about free content?

Yes, it is, at least for a large part. Therefore, we advice you to offer at least 80% of your content for free, just as usual.

This attracts visitors and shows your content is valuable. The other 20% you can offer as premium content, for which people pay. iTunes and Radiohead - with the successful online distribution of their new album In Rainbows - shows that people are still willing to pay for content, as long as the price is fair.

Also, as is The Moral of The Oronjo Story: not everything can be free, not everything has to be free. So it’s not a strange idea to pay something for useful content. What’s important, is that the price is friendly.

Consider this, if individuals or corporations don’t get a return on their investment, some day - some way the Internet will dry up.

But don’t try to make a lot of money from a few visitors. Try to make a little money from many visitors and you will become as big as Oronjo the whale.

If you want to read more about the ‘free or not’ discussion, please check our Knowledge Base.

How do I get my money?

Once your content is sold, you will get the amount (selling price minus PayPal fees) on your PayPal account.

Note:

  • You need to have your personal info completed. You can do this by clicking my settings on your account page.

  • You need to have a free PayPal account.

How can people buy my content?

They click on the Oronjo icon, log onto their PayPal account, and pay.

After they paid you, they are redirected to your content and can enjoy it as any other online content. All is done with a few mouse clicks. Check out these examples.

Why would people pay for content?

Because you’re offering them premium content and it's a no-risk service. It's both very easy to do and inexpensive to try out since they will pay you a small fee.

Also, they are already familiar with your free content and they value your expertise.
